Shidjii !!!

Shidji sent me a portrait she’d had done, and I liked it so much I wanted to share it.  It’s resized here and loses a lot of quality because of that, so if you want to see the original work you’ll have to contact her directly.

I’d often wondered what SL photographers do, and now I know it’s whole orders of magnitude more than I originally thought.  This particular work of art was done by Shadar Reisler, and I must say I’m quite impressed.  Sadly, I could not find a website or blog info for Shadar, but he clearly does quality work, so if you’re in the market for custom profile pics or other photography, look him up in-world.

ShidjiProfile

As you can see from her score profile linked above, Shidji is a fine warrior (one of the best).  In addition to that she’s a highly competent and knowledgeable teacher and valuable member of the C:SI community.

C:SI on Life4-U

Yesterday Esprite and Archanox (and I) spent a little time talking with reporter Roob Robbiani of Life4-U TV, a Second Life newscast. I was delayed with RL duties, but I did get to show up near the end and do some demo duels with Archanox, so you’ll possibly be able to recognize me and Aang (my C:SI combat bot) in the clip as well.

The C:SI segment is the last in the broadcast, following such issues as Linden Lab’s Identity Verification rollout, a Brazilian pop band’s mixed-reality music video, and other Second Life goodness.

Here’s the newscast (in QuickTime video format)

Bare@Rose Anniversary

Bare@Rose celebrated it’s 2-year anniversary last night with a C:SI tournament, good music, and lots of great community.  I got to meet June Dion finally, and while she was way too busy to spend much time in idle talk, I did enjoy the opportunity.

It was a small-ish event (maybe 25 people), but we had loads of fun there with over $30,000L in prizes given away. The tournament wasn’t so much for C:SI as it was for B@R, so there were only a few of the more well-known C:SI community fighters there, but even those new to the combat system put on a great show.  My favorite part, as usual, was the Master’s Treasure tournament after the main event, and for the first time ever I participated.  Not that I did all that well, which wasn’t the point anyways, but I really enjoyed it.

I also got a sneak preview of the changes coming out in the next version of the C:SI system, and I gotta tell you: It freaking rocks!  I’m going to keep mum about some of the stuff that impressed me most until I get word that it’s okay to talk about it, but let me just say that the guys have done an absolutely fantastic job.  Those of you that are regularly asking me what’s new and if anything is being planned should believe me when I say that you probably aren’t expecting what’s in store for you.

I also talked a bit with Ayame about some new uses for the bots I’ve been working on.  As I said earlier in the post, I’m going to keep it close to the vest for now, but Ayame had some great ideas and I see these plans having a very real benefit for the C:SI community.

I’ve got to admit that I’ve been pretty irritated with Second Life lately, and have gotten a bit of a bad attitude about whether Second Life is living up to it’s potential.  While I do honestly feel that it’s got a very long way to go before it begins to realize even the smallest part of that potential, for now I’ve got a renewed interest and vigour in the development side of things, and I’m excited to be working on new stuff that I think people will enjoy.

Have patience, dear friends, it’s coming.  And it will be cool.

Jane Kit Lives?

I received a notecard from Rayno Kidd (and a duplicate from Gregory Wellman) this morning about the dearly departed Jane Kit, which I have copied into this post after the fold.

Apparently, Jane Kit is not dead after all. It seems it was all a hoax. If you believe the perpetrator of the hoax (whose identity is still not 100% clear to me, perhaps because it’s early and I’m too busy concentrating on an RL deadline to see the obvious - Who the hell is Rudy Ruml?), this wasn’t done out of malicious intent but rather out of ignorance of how the C:SI community would react to the loss of a friend. Even a virtual - and apparently not even virtually real - friend.

I am very upset about this. I was not good friends with Jane, we didn’t hang out and chat a lot, nor did we even duel all that much. Nevertheless I felt a profound sense of loss when I had heard that she “died”, coming as it did so soon after the loss of amber Suising, and being in the stage of my life where the death of friends and family is becoming far more common than I am comfortable with.

For the perpetrator of this hoax to express shock at the outpouring of grief and goodwill from the community strikes me as profoundly ignorant. Even to those of us who did not know “Jane” well, there was still the feeling of loss, because she was “one of us”. Who would expect anything else?

I will certainly have more to say about this issue when I’ve got my mind together and more coffee, but for now, read on to see the notecard mentioned above:
