I R Not A Laptop Teknishunz

LaptopDisassembly003 Wouldn’t you know it…  Pretty much as soon as I was ready to get back into SL and start updating stuff, my laptop dies.  This weekend the fan on my main laptop starting making the most horrible racket you ever want to hear from a computer, and within hours the fan stopped rotating altogether.  I’ve been able to limp by without it by doing only the bare minimum of light work on this machine such as sending emails and light web browsing, but I’m pretty sure the machine would be reduced to a pile of smoking rubble if I even *attempted* to load Second Life.

Apparently I’m not the only one with this problem; as you can see if you click the image above, it seems to be fairly common with this model.  This is the third time now that I’ve had to replace the fan, and being essentially poor financially embarrassed, I cannot afford to have the machine repaired by a qualified laptop repair technician, so I’ll be doing the work myself.  I finally received my new fan this morning, so I’ll be starting the swearing and crying sensitive operation after I get a few cups of coffee in me.

If you’ve ever had to replace the fan on an HP laptop, you’ll probably share my urge to kill intense hatred for the designers who must have thought that it was perfectly logical to put the only moving part on the entire machine in such a place that you have to literally remove every other component to get to it.  That’s right, as steelclash’s photo above shows, you actually do have to pull your laptop completely apart to replace the fan.  And it’s a harrowing experience for me, one that I am really not looking forward to.

Once I get that done, though, I’ve got a bunch of code changes to update for the Taketori, and I will try to get an update released as soon as possible.  I doubt that I will be able to accomplish that today, because certainly once I finally log in I will be unable to get much work done because I’ll be catching up, paying rents, etc, etc.  But I will try to get it done and delivered by this weekend.

Among the important issues that this update will address are the stamina bug and the backward compatibility issue.  I’ll provide more information in another post as soon as I am able, but I can feel the spot just left of the laptop’s touchpad getting warmer than I’d like so I’m going to wrap up this post and shut ‘er down in preparation for the butchery repair procedure.

WTF - Password required to read SL Blog?!?!?!

Check out this dialog I was just presented with when I opened Firefox to read some of today’s blogosphere buzz :

ll-password-request-rss

Okay…  "Apparently there’s a picture or something in that blog post that is hosted on JIRA, which is causing the browser to ask me for my password", I thought to myself, "I should go to the actual blog post and mention that fact, I bet they’d appreciate that".  Well, easier said than done :

ll-password-request

Naturally, comments are closed.  Well, it’s not my problem, and I don’t have any real responsibility to try any harder than that to tell LL when they screw up, but I would like to point out the irony of a blog post about Payments by Bank Wire which appears to be phishing for my password :)

PS: The authentication dialog looks the way that it does because I’m using Firefox 3 with the Nasa Night Launch Theme.

Happy Father’s Day to Me

apple_cinnamon_coffeecake It’s been a pretty darned good day so far.  I’ve been baking and cooking a lot with my daughter lately - she’s been showing more interest in cooking again - and last night (at 11:00PM, I have no idea why) we had decided to make an apple-cinnamon coffee cake (click the image at right for the recipe), so I got to start out the day eating something that I made with my daughter.  That’s a good way to begin a day, in my book :)

Afterwards, the children and I began some kenjutsu practice, which is a really fantastic way to get into the rhythm of the day.  Though it’s been almost a decade since I last practiced regularly, I still find that I am absolutely in love with it.  I’m probably teaching the kids some bad habits, since I was never much more than a beginner (I only studied regularly for about two years), but I cherish the ability to share that with my children, and I no longer live near any of my former instructors, so I can justify it to myself.

seik_3Speaking of instructors, that guy there on the left-hand side is Kurita-sensei, a former uchi-deshi to O-sensei, who went on later to become the founder of the particular school of Aikido / Kenjutsu / Jodo that I used to study.   I dearly miss when he would come to America to teach in seminars during the summer.  It was always highly educational, and the man has serious mad skillz and a real talent for teaching.  Anyways, I really enjoyed that time with the children this morning, and I really think it’s a great way to bond and share some special time.

Continuing the wonderful trend, even dinner was pretty fantastic today.  I made one of my favorite meals: barbequed pork ribs on the grill, baked potatoes, and corn on the cob.  Yeah, yeah, my favorite meal is basically comfort food, sue me :) For once, everything turned out pretty much exactly the way I wanted it to, and it’s hard to imagine enjoying any meal more.  It really was that good.

250px-A_small_cup_of_coffee As soon as I can find the room, I’m going to sit down with a cup of fresh-brewed coffee and a big old slice of chocolate cake that my daughter made for me today at some point when I wasn’t looking, the little sneaker.  I’ve already tried some of it, and I have to say, that girl makes a mean freaking cake.  She may only be in her teens, but her cakes are easily as good as any other I’ve ever tried.  I sure wish I knew what the hell she was doing differently, since her cakes are better than mine, haha.  In any case, I expect that I’ll thoroughly enjoy dessert as well.

I hope that all of the fathers who come across this post, as well as those that don’t, are having their own fantastic father’s day!

Muh brain

Just felt like posting this, for no particular reason other than the fact that I like the way my eyes appear to be glowing in this one, which is a pretty darned cool effect :)
