Havok 4 to be deployed on Monday

Yup, the rumor is true, Havok 4 is to be deployed grid-wide on Monday and Tuesday.

It does not appear that any of the bugs affecting C:SI will be fixed by then, and Linden Lab knows that they are releasing a physics server with many significant changes :

Please remember - we are here and will be here - we know that you will find some things that behave differently with this version. We will be fixing critical issues as they are raised, and issuing updates as necessary in the short term. Thanks for all of your support! /Sidewinder

Apparently the consideration of whether Havok 4 is more stable than the current simulator code is more important than whether it will break existing content :

As part of our continued effort to increase the stability and reliability of Second Life, we are happy to announce a new simulator that significantly reduces region crashes. This release is the result of the Havok™4 project, a project that updated the physics engine used to determine all movement of objects in Second Life.

….

The Linden Lab Havok4 team will continue to review open issues and work on critical bugs after the release. We know that you will find things that still need attention, and we fully expect that we will continue to do fixes and updates in the period following the release.

With all of the down-time, the almost daily problems with transactions for the last couple of weeks, and everything that has been going horribly wrong lately, I might actually agree with them on that.  I’m not terribly thrilled at being a content creator that will have to field questions and provide support for now-broken products, but this may provide some much-needed stability for everyone in general.

In any case, I am certainly very glad that I’m not the one in charge of making this decision.

Linden Lab™ is looking into the kick issue

I just received an email regarding the Jira issue SVC-1648, which pertains to the problem that C:SI users are having with kicks in Havok™ 4 early-adopter sims, notifying me that it has finally been assigned to Kelly Linden.

Apparently Kelly Linden had not seen the object that I passed to Sidewinder Linden as a repro case :

Please give me a copy of the super simple object you mention. I’m having trouble tracking it down.

I suppose the Lindens get all kinds of inventory offers from all kinds of people, so I made sure to put the JIRA issue number in the object’s name before I passed another copy to Kelly.

Kelly also asked

Push behavior has changed significantly since this bug was first filed. Not saying there aren’t still issues. Have you tested these on the build currently on the Beta grid?

I have not yet been to the Beta grid to test the latest Havok™ version there.  Has anyone else done so?  If so, please leave a comment about whether the behavior is still the same.

Here’s to hoping for a resolution before Havok™ 4 goes live grid-wide!!!

Havok™ 4 to be deployed grid-wide soon?

Havok™.logo I recently saw an article on Darien Caldwell’s blog that Linden Lab® is preparing to launch Havok™ 4 grid-wide in the near future, as soon as the next week or two.  The post stated that supporting text could be found on the Second Life® Blog, but when I went to look for myself, no such text could be found.  Turns out that Linden Lab® had removed the text because the announcement of the rollout was "possibly premature", but Darien is obviously not the only person to have noticed.

In today’s Second Life® Blog article, Gaius Goodliffe also mentions the quick edit (in response to a question by Vittorio Beerbaum), as well as a bit of discussion regarding the subject at the last Havok™ 4 office hours.  Gaius further speculates that it seems very likely that the rollout will occur as planned, and Massively seems to agree :

The text was, apparently, very quickly withdrawn, but we think that it is very plausible that the Havok™.4 code will roll out either next week or the week after. It’s presently into release-candidates, and the reports we have on how it functions are all very positive. Assuming 1.19.2 goes well this week, it seems likely that Havok™.4 will hit the grid within the next 14 days.

It would seem that calling Havok™ 4 a "Release Candidate" was intentional after all?  In any case, it seems likely (or at least Linden Lab® has not denied it even though they’ve responded to other comments on the same blog post) that we can expect Havok™ 4 on all sims in the very near future.

Havok™ 4 Regions updated with 11 fixes

Just wanted to post a quick note on the news that the Havok™ team has deployed another 11 fixes to 559 Early Adopter regions.  Looking at the list of fixes, I don’t see anything that will specifically affect C:SI, though I’m hoping those of you in-world can see if they had any secondary benefits.  It’s possible that some of the things regarding energy could be peripherally related to some of the problems we’ve seen.

I also want to take this opportunity to point out for the benefit of those not following the comments to the C:SI Weapons Breaking thread that Darien Caldwell had some insights that, if correct, could mean that the issue is not necessarily related to Havok™ 4 (unless they picked up the problem from base simulator code) :

Something just occurred to me, I have seen a Math Error like this before, when attempting to use llSetColor on a face that didn’t exist. Why this causes a Math Error, I don’t know.

If the issue is occurring when drawing the weapon, perhaps it has to do with the call to llSetAlpha and the face parameter? Or trying to set alpha on a linked prim that doesn’t exist? Some wild guesses.

There was some additional speculation in the comments to that post, and at this point I am beginning to suspect that it’s related to setting alpha on prims with a possible notecard corruption issue as a contributing factor.  I have yet to be able to verify that, though, so I’m asking everyone who sees this issue to please report it with :

  • The name of the weapon that has the problem (this may turn out to be significant)
  • The region you were in
  • The time it occurred
  • Anything else you think may be relevant.

I won’t be likely to get in-world tonight to test the new Havok™ stuff, but I encourage anyone who notices any problems (or new physics goodness) to report it here or on the Official C:SI Forums.
