Followup : SVC-1975 (Avatar Jump Height)

I recently posted that "The Lab" had implemented a fix for SVC-1975 (Havok 4: Avatar jump height is greatly lessened), and that they would likely be deploying the fix in the near future.

They just announced today that you can test that fix on the Beta Grid, which is pretty quick turnaround on a PJira issue, and I’m quite pleased to think that it will be available on the main grid soon.

And once again, I want to do my "sounding like a broken record" act and encourage people to go to the Jira list Aimee set up for other bugs that affect C:SI and vote and leave comments!  Perhaps they will eventually get those [Resolved] as well :)

Could it be? Will "The Lab" fix avatar jump height?

jump I’ve been fooled before, but I just received notice that work has started on issue SVC-1975: Avatar jump height is greatly lessened.

While I’d prefer that they worked on the kick issue (SVC-1648), it looks like that issue is dead in the water and I’m happy that they are working on any of the several issues currently adversely affecting C:SI combat.

Linden Lab™ wants comparative metrics…

…because apparently they never tested it themselves, and weren’t aware (or don’t believe) that you cannot jump as high in Havok 4 as you could in Havok 1 :

Can you provide us with Comparative metrics for this? are you noticing this difference without your AO on?

Since it is no longer possible to generate "comparative metrics" without access to a Havok 1 sim, I suggest that anyone else who has noticed decreased jump height head on over to JIRA-1975 and let them know that it’s not just "in our heads".

I am not promising they’ll do anything about it, they seem to be steadfastly ignoring other issues that affect C:SI, but it would sure be great to let them know that we’ve noticed, even if they haven’t.

Havok 4 to be deployed on Monday

Yup, the rumor is true, Havok 4 is to be deployed grid-wide on Monday and Tuesday.

It does not appear that any of the bugs affecting C:SI will be fixed by then, and Linden Lab knows that they are releasing a physics server with many significant changes :

Please remember - we are here and will be here - we know that you will find some things that behave differently with this version. We will be fixing critical issues as they are raised, and issuing updates as necessary in the short term. Thanks for all of your support! /Sidewinder

Apparently the consideration of whether Havok 4 is more stable than the current simulator code is more important than whether it will break existing content :

As part of our continued effort to increase the stability and reliability of Second Life, we are happy to announce a new simulator that significantly reduces region crashes. This release is the result of the Havok™4 project, a project that updated the physics engine used to determine all movement of objects in Second Life.

….

The Linden Lab Havok4 team will continue to review open issues and work on critical bugs after the release. We know that you will find things that still need attention, and we fully expect that we will continue to do fixes and updates in the period following the release.

With all of the down-time, the almost daily problems with transactions for the last couple of weeks, and everything that has been going horribly wrong lately, I might actually agree with them on that.  I’m not terribly thrilled at being a content creator that will have to field questions and provide support for now-broken products, but this may provide some much-needed stability for everyone in general.

In any case, I am certainly very glad that I’m not the one in charge of making this decision.
