Pre-release viewer 1.20.0 (84432) sculpt issue

The viewer released yesterday doesn’t seem to want to download sculpted prim maps from the server.  Here is a picture of the resolution of one of my sculpted prim textures after about 20 minutes of waiting :

And here’s a (representation) of how sharp the image usually is after mere seconds, with an empty cache :

Keep in mind that these are the same sculpted prim textures that I see on a daily basis (and that many of you have seen on my new Taketori beta), in the same exact class-5-sim location I’ve seen them on a daily basis for months, using the same machine on the same network, etc, etc.  The only change is having downloaded the newly announced release-candidate viewer

This has the chilling and frustrating effect that my sword has, for the last 35 minutes, looked like a blob of vertex vomit with no apparent intention of getting any better :(

[EDIT] In the 20 minutes it took me to capture screenshots and put together this post, there has been no additional progress.  The viewer seems to have simply stalled and given up on downloading the sculpt map.  Those very few sculpts that have downloaded appear to be at the wrong level of detail.  :(

Easy before you burst a blood vessel. More coffee over this way —>

Well, I’ve had my coffee, smoked a few cigarettes, went for a walk, and even kissed my wife. And yet, I still think this new viewer is absolute crap.

In fact, I like it less now than I did when I posted this morning, seeing as how my wife crashes after less than two minutes online each time using this viewer, and even Vint Falken doesn’t really like it.

And I’m not alone, either :p

After reading about so many problems with the Release Candidate, I have opted to stick with the main viewer. I do have a somewhat similar problem when trying to rez a newly-uploaded sculptie texture. I have no idea why it doesn’t want to rez as fast as my freshly uploaded 1024×1024 texture. Really one would think the small texture would rez pretty quickly. I’ve found that rezzing a cube and putting the texture on a face of that helps, and also jiggling around the shape helps… or at least it’s something to do while waiting.

I remember reading somewhere recently that there was a bug in the Windlight codebase that actually had sculpty textures stall while downloading, with the result that they would *never* finish, but I cannot find it now.

LL is pushing out too much too fast, and failing miserably in the quality assurance department. That failure is largely due, I believe, to a dedicated unwillingness to use their own product in more than a cursory/casual manner :)

New policy: All LL employees must code from inside SL. And they can’t see anyone in RL during the work day, they must be isolated in their office and speak with people in SL.

If only they would actually *USE* Second Life themselves, it would be a better quality product, and they wouldn’t need us residents to inform them of every bug that slips into a release.

I think it’s generally accepted in the development industry that “eating your own dogfood” is a proven way to increase product quality.
