Havok 4 to be deployed on Monday

Yup, the rumor is true, Havok 4 is to be deployed grid-wide on Monday and Tuesday.

It does not appear that any of the bugs affecting C:SI will be fixed by then, and Linden Lab knows that they are releasing a physics server with many significant changes :

Please remember - we are here and will be here - we know that you will find some things that behave differently with this version. We will be fixing critical issues as they are raised, and issuing updates as necessary in the short term. Thanks for all of your support! /Sidewinder

Apparently the consideration of whether Havok 4 is more stable than the current simulator code is more important than whether it will break existing content :

As part of our continued effort to increase the stability and reliability of Second Life, we are happy to announce a new simulator that significantly reduces region crashes. This release is the result of the Havok™4 project, a project that updated the physics engine used to determine all movement of objects in Second Life.

….

The Linden Lab Havok4 team will continue to review open issues and work on critical bugs after the release. We know that you will find things that still need attention, and we fully expect that we will continue to do fixes and updates in the period following the release.

With all of the down-time, the almost daily problems with transactions for the last couple of weeks, and everything that has been going horribly wrong lately, I might actually agree with them on that.  I’m not terribly thrilled at being a content creator that will have to field questions and provide support for now-broken products, but this may provide some much-needed stability for everyone in general.

In any case, I am certainly very glad that I’m not the one in charge of making this decision.

Yeah I can totally agree with you on the being glad about not making that decision. At any rate, i’m glad that havok 4 is finally getting rolled out grid wide. Whether or not there are still bugs pertaining to C:SI, i’m not quite as worried about. The way I see it, sooner or later the bug will be fixed.

Yes, sooner or later. Then again, sooner or later the “all my attachments in my butt” bug will be fixed. Or the “Where the heck did all my inventory go?” bug.

    It’s just a question of when :)

I have to admit that I am very curious indeed to see how well this does when deployed grid-wide. I fervently hope that it’s truly a benefit for the grid as a whole.

And yet I STILL can’t kick people away! lol Curse you LL! *shakes fist* Considering that a few friends and I are buying a sim this will be interesting. I’m glad that it came but, did it have to come so soon? Gah! Fix most of the critical crap first! And give me my kick back! lol

Well, we will see what we see, I guess. I *HOPE* that it goes well and that the rollout does what they hope : increase stability.

I suspect, based on nothing but pessimism learned from historical evidence, that there will be major hiccups followed by a rollback.

Even if it does go smoothly, once people start realizing how much is broken in H4, the Linden Lab support telephone switches are likely to light up.

Either way, I’m pretty glad I don’t work at LL :)

I had fun jumping on your heads.. guess thats done too =(

Yeah, so much for the head standing >.

Well dang, I suppose that’s true, isn’t it? I’ll miss that.

I just remembered something… It’s been a while since I tested this, so I have no idea whether it’s still true in the latest releases of the Havok code, but when Havok 4 first came out it was exceedingly difficult to “bump the block”. Almost impossible. You’d actually go through someone, or nudge around them, when you tried.

I wonder if that’s still true? Anyone else know?

Well from what I have seen of the latest H4 semi roll-out / all is good in the new world. This represents a huge improvement in the world of SL physics interactions. Yes I suspect many products based on H1 will be broken and need to be fixed. I also believe that the upcoming introduction of Mono will have the same effect. All in all LL is finally moving forward again :_)

Yes, existing products will be broken. BY THE THOUSANDS.

In the long run, it will be a good thing, I think we can definitely agree on that.

In the short term, however, please excuse me if I’m not 100% ecstatic about them rolling it out before it’s really compatible :)

I am happy to see the platform progressing, I’ll give them that much.

Yah Takuan, you still can’t bump blocks last time I tried. Dashes into opponents go *thru* them instead of knocking them away. I’ve kinda started using that to be sneaky…dash thru someone, spin around, slash. LOL

Oh, great, why am I not surprised that the fix for bumping people is as bad as the problem?

hehe, that rocks, though… Always exploring technique aren’t ya?

    :)

LOL Yah…I’m always trying to figger out new stuffs. Like…by no means am I best fighter on the block but I like to think of myself as well-rounded. XD
