Havok™ 4 to be deployed grid-wide soon?

Havok™.logo I recently saw an article on Darien Caldwell’s blog that Linden Lab® is preparing to launch Havok™ 4 grid-wide in the near future, as soon as the next week or two.  The post stated that supporting text could be found on the Second Life® Blog, but when I went to look for myself, no such text could be found.  Turns out that Linden Lab® had removed the text because the announcement of the rollout was "possibly premature", but Darien is obviously not the only person to have noticed.

In today’s Second Life® Blog article, Gaius Goodliffe also mentions the quick edit (in response to a question by Vittorio Beerbaum), as well as a bit of discussion regarding the subject at the last Havok™ 4 office hours.  Gaius further speculates that it seems very likely that the rollout will occur as planned, and Massively seems to agree :

The text was, apparently, very quickly withdrawn, but we think that it is very plausible that the Havok™.4 code will roll out either next week or the week after. It’s presently into release-candidates, and the reports we have on how it functions are all very positive. Assuming 1.19.2 goes well this week, it seems likely that Havok™.4 will hit the grid within the next 14 days.

It would seem that calling Havok™ 4 a "Release Candidate" was intentional after all?  In any case, it seems likely (or at least Linden Lab® has not denied it even though they’ve responded to other comments on the same blog post) that we can expect Havok™ 4 on all sims in the very near future.

I guess this is probably Havok 4 without push with kick when using CSI weapons (unless that is fixed in the next two weeks)?

There will still be development of Havok4 after its out. People for some reason seem to think, or at least make it seem that they think Linden Lab isn’t going to work on havok 4 anymore once its out. This is just a gridwide release of something thats been tested on a select group of sims.

Best way to full test something is to do a full release!

Well, I will agree that it is the most sure-fire way to flush out any issues that haven’t been found yet, but I would definitely not go so far as to call it “best” or suggest that it can be a valid substitute for having a crack team of Quality Assurance Engineers working on the project full-time.

I don’t know whether the kick bug persists, as I’ve determined to stay out of SL this week for my own sanity. They did do an update today, though I very much doubt the issue is currently resolved, and won’t speculate (again for my own sanity) whether it will be fixed in the next couple of weeks.

I hope you are right, Zero, that they continue to address critical issues after deployment, rather than (as has seemingly oft been the case in the past) moving on to the next exciting and shiny new thing. There is plenty of anecdotal and historical evidence that growing the features has a higher priority than putting in the “last mile” on smashing bugs.

Perhaps we will see better overall grid stability after deployment, which would certainly be welcome, and that might buy LL a bit of credit in my opinion.

Yes Zero I realize that, I was just hoping that they fixed this well documented bug before rolling Havok 4 out grid wide. Fingers crossed.

I think LindenLabs maybe consider it fixed as much as its gunna be as far as they’re concerned. But who knows.

If thats how they going to treat there customers just ignoring important bugs then screw them. Theyll either crasha dna burn or get there shit together eventually.

I can neither confirm nor deny I was asked to pretty please remove my blog post, until such as time as the true date was confirmed.

But I would say it is likely to be coming “Sometime Soon” ™

I understand. Linden Lab would likely not want that information out until they were clearly ready to commit to a date, leaving them room to change their minds.

Fortunately, whether or not you can confirm or deny whether your own blog had such information, it was clearly visible in questions on subsequent Second Life® Blog posts as well as Massively, thus saving you the need to do so :)

Had it not been also mentioned elsewhere, I would have waited to mention this information. I would certainly not wish for anyone to be upset at you, you did after all allegedly remove the alleged information when allegedly asked.

Hopefully there will be more good to come of such an aggressive release date than there will be harm done. I’m sure we would all like a more stable grid, though I absolutely shudder when I think that the C:SI devs might have fifteen thousand angry customers because of something that Linden Lab has done.
